Giant Theremin of the Day: A 23-foot-high version of a theremin — the instrument that generates the spooky humming sounds you hear in old sci-fi theme tunes — has appeared on the streets of Melbourne, Australia, making sounds in response to the movements of passersby.
The theremin, which is the work of artist Robin Fox, had to be modified from its standard design because "if we were to make a seven metre tall theremin that was pumping out that sort of electromagnetic field, we'd probably microwave people, so that wasn't really practical."
So instead of microwaving people, they just decided to freak them out with creepy music.
