Touchable 3D Projection of the Day: Researchers at Japan's Keio University have developed a system that allows the user to interact with a miniature 3D-projected character via touch.

Their RePro3D system includes "tactile interface" that clips on to the user's finger, an infrared camera and a glasses-free 3D display showing a computer-modeled character. When users touch the character, the camera picks up their movements and sends a tactile response to the finger attachment.

It's not exactly Star Trek's holodeck, but it's a step toward holograms that feel as solid as real objects.
