Skin-Bonded Circuits of the Day

Skin-Bonded Circuits of the Day: Scientists at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign have figured out how to attach electronic circuits to human skin as easily as a temporary tattoo.

The new technology rubs on with water, and the circuit components match the flexibility of human skin. In fact, the electronics mimic the skin so well that they can even be concealed under an actual temporary tattoo.

The adhesive agent is a thin sheet of bendy elastomer. According to Science:

[T]he elastomer sticks to the skin naturally, using only the weak, short-range, attractive forces that always exist between neighboring molecules for adhesion. It can stay attached for over 24 hours almost anywhere on the body.

Researchers have already applied a tiny heart monitor to a person's chest, getting readings as accurate as an EKG. They've also placed a tiny microphone on another person's throat and trained it to recognize four different voice commands.
